Program Overview

The program serves kannada speaking community members resident in San Joaquin County, California, and has garnered widespread acceptance and support from the community, parents, and students alike. As of 2025 the program offers language classes for grades 1 to 6 and 4 high school grades via meticulously designed curriculum and custom textbooks.

The plan is to induct and train students of non Indian origin in the coming years.

Tailored Curriculum and Community Support

The Namma Kannada Kalike Kaaryakrama curriculum is tailored to meet the specific needs of students studying Kannada, with textbooks and workbooks authored and edited by a team of educators and industry experts. This collaborative effort ensures the program aligns with educational standards and cultural relevance.

Due to growing community interest, there was a clear need to extend the Kannada language curriculum into high school education. As a result, a high school credits program was implemented in 2025.

Growth and Expansion

Since its inception in 2020 with just 13 students and 3 teachers, the program has seen remarkable growth. By the academic year of 2024-25, the number of students surged to over 90, supported by a dedicated team of 15 teachers. The first batch of elementary grade students graduated from Sixth grade in 2025.

Core Values

The culture of Namma Kannada Kalike Kaaryakrama embodies the following core principles:

  • Inclusive Learning Environment: We provide a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every student feels valued and supported in their journey to learn Kannada. We emphasize mutual respect, diversity, and collaboration among students, teachers, and the community.
  • Cultural Pride and Preservation: We encourage a deep respect for and connection to Karnataka state’s rich cultural heritage. We integrate cultural activities, traditions, and values into the curriculum to instill pride in students about their linguistic and cultural roots.
  • Academic Excellence: We promote a culture of academic rigor and excellence where students are encouraged to achieve their highest potential in listening, reading, writing, and speaking Kannada. We recognize and celebrate their achievements to motivate continuous improvement.
  • Lifelong Learning: We encourage cultivating a lifelong love for learning by fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a growth mindset. We encourage students to see language learning as a continuous journey that extends beyond the classroom and practice speaking at home. To do that, we help parents by conducting virtual workshops through guest speakers.
  • Global Perspective: While rooted in local culture, we promote a global perspective by highlighting the relevance and utility of Kannada in broader contexts (The illustrations and stories we use as subject matter in the textbook are contextualized and evidence the above fact) and encourage students to see the value of multilingualism and the importance of cultural exchange.
  • Innovative Teaching Methods: We embrace and implement innovative and effective teaching strategies to make learning Kannada engaging, enjoyable, and relevant. We incorporate technology like Google Classroom, Kahoot, FlipGrid, Jam Board, creative arts, and interactive methods to enhance the learning experience.
  • Community Engagement: Build strong connections with the local community, including parents, cultural organizations (with SJKS as our parent cultural organization), and other stakeholders. Encourage community involvement in the program to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment.
  • Student-Centered Approach: Prioritize the needs, interests, and well-being of students. Create a supportive environment that addresses learning styles, ensuring students can thrive.
  • Ethical Values: Promote integrity, responsibility, and ethical behavior ( through use of several moral based stories). Encourage students to apply these values in their personal, academic, and professional lives. For example: We teach the numbers 1-20 by listing 20 great habits.
  • Continuous Improvement: Commit to ongoing evaluation and improvement of the program. Solicit feedback from students, parents, and educators to continuously refine and enhance the learning experience. We are in the 4th edition of the first grade book.

By fostering these principles, Namma Kannada Kalike Kaaryakrama can create a vibrant, effective, and inspiring learning culture that aligns with its mission and vision.
